happy halloween

halloween 2011

Phew! I'm exhausted! I'm also soaked to the skin but the kids had a great time guising tonight. The weather started as good old Scottish drizzle which then turned to a heavy downpour.

Our own street was incredibly quiet in fact our house only had one - yes one guiser! Myself, Kirstin and Jamie went up to join friends who's street is a totally different story. Dozens and I mean dozens of kids out in all manner of disguises (this is where the term guising comes from - disguise) exchanging jokes and songs for sweets and the occasional tangerine. The houses were done up with tomb stones, skeletons (including one real one), witches, black cats, ghosts, one even had a smoke machine! The kids must have just about collected their own body weight in sweets and didn't mind ending up soaked through. By the end Jamie's face paint bat mask was running into his eyes and we called it a night.

Now when I was a kid we carved out neeps (turnip) not pumpkins and much as I would like to keep that tradition alive pumpkins are so much easier to carve. Carving out a neep (never mind 2 or 3) is some task, even though they are tiny compared to most pumpkins.

Jamie decided he wanted to have a face on either side of his pumpkin so that's exactly what we did. He drew faces with a sharpie pen and then I did my best to cut out exactly what he drew. Now as a self confessed control freak I did rather want to neaten and tidy his designs but I restrained myself and went totally with his ideas. Apparently the line below face 1's nose is it's neck or it may be a moustache he wasn't sure which!

We got a second year out of his Bat Boy costume so this is a bit of a cheat as it's last years photo - guess who forgot to take a photo this year before he got soaked and the face paint ran all over it.

So that's Halloween done and dusted, onwards to Guy Fawkes night! I hope you all had a fun Halloween and if you have any pumpkin soup recipes, let me know, I think I might be needing one.

bye for now
