my first quilt, finished at last!

arcadia coin quilt

It's been a long time coming but my first quilt is finally finished. It's been pretty much done for a while now but there were still threads to be tidied up and stuff so I didn't tick it off as complete until now.

I started this as part of a quilt-a-long on Ravelry ages and ages ago. I thought it may never be done as I was avoiding having to quilt it but that didn't turn out to be so bad after all. I thought straight line quilting would be a nightmare but since free-motion quilting seems beyond me straight lines were actually easier than I thought.

The coins started out much wider than the are now however I decided I didn't like that so it was dismantled and I cut them much narrower. Also when it came the quilting part I started out by quilting to the end of the coin columns then thought that looked weird so went back and stitched the last few inches at each end of the columns so it went right to the edge of the quilt.

I was trying to save cash when I pieced the back so the grey band maybe isn't exactly as I might have wanted but by that point I just wanted to get the quilt finished. I used Klona cotton in Ash  for the sashing and Kona cotton in Stone for the back. The binding is made up of all the left overs (well not all of them as there's still some left) of the coins.

I used Quilter's Dream wadding which is gorgeously soft and quilting thread from Empress Mills which seems pretty good. All in all I do actually like this, I wasn't sure for a while as it felt like it would remain a WIP for ever.

Here it is next to my Echino cushions I think they look pretty good together, don't you?

Ah the wonderful feeling when you complete project, great!

Bye for now

Looks fantastic. Congratulations on your first quilt. Now get one with starting to cut fabric for your second. There is no turning back now!

Ahh you must feel great getting it finished! I get such a feeling of satisfaction every time I see or USE my first (and so far only) quilt! I remember how I kinda lost my mojo towards the end too and just wanted it to be finished. The actual 'quilting' took sooooo long.

Oh well done you!  It's really lovely and boy oh boy does it go brilliantly with the Echinos or what??
You have a great eye for colour and tone, so can't wait to see what comes next ... Yay You!

This is so lovely! A great palette of colours. I've never quilted before but think I might have to start...

Of course you can, anytime :)

thank you :) It's a slippery slope quilting, I warn you. For someone who's only made one quilt I seem to have an awful lot of quilting fabric.

Thanks Sarah! I think the next one will have to wait as I have nae money but that does mean I can plan as many imaginary quilts as I like. My dream quilt would be made from Echino of course!

Thanks Susan! I'm loving your wonky stars quilt but I'm a lazy quilter (plus still rubbish at accurate cutting/piecing) so I think it'd be a few steps too far for me at the moment. One day though!
